Pan's Labyrinth.

(54 mins , 31 secs - 57 mins , 27 secs).

The scene begins and the shot is instantly illuminated in a red colour through the use of aesthetics , possibly signalling danger , the space looks small and almost claustrophobic , it is also appearing to be a long hallway and the lighting is low key , these elements play on the conventions of horror.
Their is a very prominent , eerie echo heard in the distance , as Ofelia walks deeper into the room.

The shot changes and we see Ofelia , the room and the Pale Man , sat at the end of a very long table , the shot is mid shot so we can see multiple characters and also their surroundings.Adding to the theme of danger and red aesthetic , a brightly lit fireplace is seen behind the Pale Man , this could hint he is the danger foreshadowed at the beginning. It also mirrors Captain Vidal's mannerisms in his feast scene. It is signifiant that these characters are seated at the head of the table as it is trying to paint them as superior character's with higher authority , this is presented through the mise en scene.
They are both equally scary characters who evoke fear from their victims when they are prominently angry or awoken. The aesthetics in both shots are similar , very dark and disturbing with sightly more red tones in The Pale Man's scene. It also links to the time of the film being set , men were the superior sex as it was very much a patriarchal society and men overruled women.

Vidal.                                                                                    Pale Man.

We then receive a close up of all the food presented on the table , this was purposefully done to show the temptation on Ofelia's face , the fruit seems to be prominently red , again , playing on the theme of 'danger'.The fruit is the catalyst of many bad decisions in this film , it also is a reference to Eve eating the apple (sin) and dealing with severe consequences afterwards.
The camera abruptly shifts to the Pale Man , he is still and extremely creepy , Ofelia looks alarmed and her performance and body language shows she is scared , he is superior and therefore almost sends a message to the viewer that she is human and has emotions and therefore , this fear is real and she is not living in fantasy , the fear originates from somewhere.

The pale man also has no testicals , this represents his lack of masculinity , he does not represent a gender , he is a force of fear.

Their is also a consistent repetition of circles and eyes and mouths , representing the time period , lacking in what you can see and what you can say.
When Franco was in power , the country was overruled by fashism , this idea is constantly made apparent , through dialogue but also in cinematography.
The lighting being dark , hidden and away from their mouths.
